Welcome to the Open Metaverse Browser Wiki — a living knowledge base for the ideas, standards, protocols, and implementation patterns needed to build an open metaverse browser and the broader open spatial internet.
This wiki is currently stewarded by the Metaverse Standards Forum. The goal is to collect, connect, and clarify the shared building blocks the entire ecosystem will need.
¶ What this wiki is (and isn’t)
- A technical + conceptual wiki focused on enabling an open metaverse browser
- A place to document and compare standards, protocols, specs, architectures, and best practices
- A shared map of the ecosystem: projects, working groups, tools, implementations, open questions
- A resource that aims to be neutral, link-heavy, and grounded in primary sources
- A marketing site
- A single-vendor platform pitch
- A “metaverse opinions” blog (though context pages and careful definitions are welcome)
Over the next several months, we’ll be dumping a lot of information into this wiki quickly. Because the structure is still emerging, it may feel messy at first — that’s expected.
Think of the near-term phase as:
- Capture first
- Organize second
- Curate continuously
We’re looking for a few dedicated people with organization skills and some spare CPU cycles to help with:
- Information architecture (categories, page templates, nav structure)
- Formatting & cleanup (turn notes into readable pages)
- Curation (merge duplicates, add cross-links, reduce repetition)
- Proofing (clarity, neutrality, citations)
- Expansion (fill in missing context, add references and primary sources)
If you want to contribute, start here:
- Add citations to pages that need sources
- Create “stub” pages for missing topics and link to them from related pages
- Tag pages with categories so we can build navigation around real content
If you’re able to commit ongoing time, please introduce yourself on the Contributors page (or the community channel associated with this wiki).
If you’re new, these are the best “entry ramps”:
-
Start Here / Orientation
- What is an “open metaverse browser”?
- What does “open” mean (and not mean)?
- Key terms & definitions
-
Standards & Protocols
- Identity / authentication
- Assets / scene formats
- Networking / real-time sync
- Spatial anchors / mapping & routing
- Permissions & safety
-
Architecture
- Browser model (client/runtime)
- Service model (hosted, discoverable, composable)
- State, persistence, and interoperability patterns
-
Ecosystem Map
- Relevant specs and standards bodies
- Open-source projects
- Commercial implementations (non-promotional, comparative)
-
Open Questions
- Gaps, disagreements, and unsolved problems worth tracking publicly
To keep this wiki useful and credible:
- Prefer primary sources (official specs, repos, papers)
- Be precise (define terms; avoid buzzwords)
